Enlisted as Private in Co. H, 102nd OVI, on 5 August 1862 at age of 18. On 24 September 1864, while the regiment was stationed in Decatur, AL, he was ordered to join a relief expedition to relieve the Union garrison at Ft. Henderson in Athens, AL, that was under attack by rebel cavalry under CSA Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. While the relief detachment was fighting to gain the fort, it was suddenly unexpectedly surrendered by its commander. Thereafter, the relief column was attacked by Forrest's troops and Pvt. Boon was captured and then sent to Cahaba Prison. He was exchanged on 22 April 1865, and mustered out at Columbus, OH, on 20 May 1865. He and his brother David were killed acting as a vigilantes while chasing a suspected outlaw in Chaffee County, Colorado Territory.
