FUNERAL SERVICES HELD FOR PIONEER OF SPARKS
Slayton a resident of I. T. and Oklahoma Since 1880
Green Daniel Slayton, a pioneer of Indian Territory and Oklahoma, born December 11, 1845 in Trenton, Gibson County, Tennessee, passed away January 9, 1935 at his home after an illness of almost seven months duration, being ninety-one years and twenty-nine days of age. Green was the son of Abel Cain and Nancy Jane (Baily) Hall Slayton, both born in Virginia.
In 1859 with his parents he moved to Randolph County, Arkansas. Green married Margaret Elizabeth Scott, to this union two children were born, James Henry and Mary Isabelle (Belle). Margaret passed away May 20, 1870. His second wife was Luranie Catherine Nix. He then met and married Julia Arcilla Prince on July 16, 1879. The next year they came by wagon trail to Indianola, Indian Territory. They lived and worked on land owned by the McAlester's. In 1892 Green bought the homestead rights to a farm in the Lydia area. In 1908 they bought and moved to their present home "Rockford Farms" just west of Sparks.
Green is survived by his wife, Julia of the home, Mrs. Mary Nale of Indianola, Mrs. Mattie Brown Haley of Chandler, Benjamin Franklin of Sparks, Joseph Sylvester of Kingfisher and Mrs. Pearl Henderson of Sparks. He was preceded in death by oldest son James Henry eight years ago in Alice Texas and son Reuben that died in infancy. Besides his wife and children there are twenty-five grand children and twenty-seven great grand children and other relatives.
When a young man Mr. Slayton united with the Christian church and lived a faithful Christian life ‘til the end. No greater tribute can be paid than the words "a faithful Christian"
Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon from the Christian church by Rev. M. M. Moss pastor of the Manvel Avenue Christian church at Chandler.
Pall bearers were his grandsons Gus Haley, Everett Haley, Norman Haley, Lynval Haley, Joe Haley and Harold Slayton. Flower girls were Iona Miller, Mary Lou Winn, Lorena Pritchett and Frances Spoonamore.
Interment was made in the White Dove cemetery.
