Joseph E. Bouchard, 65, newspaper editor
Joseph E. Bouchard, 65, a former editor with The Washington Post and the Journal Newspapers, died of cancer Sept. 3 at his home in Springfield.
Mr. Bouchard was born in Point-au-Pic, Quebec, and grew up in Washington. He graduated from Western High School and attended George Washington University, where he played varsity football and basketball.
His journalism career began at 15 at the Washington Times-Herald, where he worked as a copy boy. A year later, he was promoted to night police reporter and photographer.
During the 1950s, he worked in various parts of the country for papers such as the Anchorage Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Detroit Free Press, the Washington Star, Daily News and the Army Times.
In 1958, he joined the Baltimore Sun as a sportswriter and author of a behind-the-scenes column called "In the Know With Joe." Over the years, he culled an impressive list of contacts across the Washington-Baltimore area.
In the early 1960s, he began working part time at The Washington Post as an assistant news editor, and was hired to work full time in 1966.
Mr. Bouchard was named overnight editor on the metropolitan staff in the mid-1970s. He was responsible for monitoring breaking news anywhere in the world, tracking down leads from his varied sources and making sure no story went uncovered.
In 1987, he joined the Journal Newspapers as managing editor for the weekly paper, Journal Life.
Mr. Bouchard later worked as a production editor for the papers before taking the helm of a new product, the Friday Auto Report, in 1992.
Always quick to tell a story, Mr. Bouchard was a mentor to many young journalists, often regaling them with tales about the early days of newspapers.
Mr. Bouchard was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Annandale, the National Press Club and the Writer's Guild.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Sheila Ann Bouchard of Springfield; two sons, Michel Emile Bouchard and Jerome Emile Bouchard, both of Springfield; two daughters, Megan Anne Bouchard of Washington and Kelly Anne Bouchard of Springfield; and two grandchildren.
Services will be held 10 a.m. today at Holy Spirit Church, 8800 Braddock Road.
