Fred Adoplhus Dorn was the 4th child born August 31, 1865 in California to N. A. J. and Rebecca Dorn. His early life was spent in San Francisco, around 1887 he moved to San Luis Obispo. He studied law and was admitted to the Bar in California. In 1890 he was united in marriage with Cora B. Russell. In 1894 he was elected District Attorney of San Luis Obispo serving in that capacity until 1899.

After serving as DA, returned with his wife to San Francisco. After a difficult pregnancy in 1905, his namesake son was born and died soon afterwards. Cora died a few days later. Fred had the elaborte pyramid built for Cora and their son. Both were cremated and it is believed their remains are within the pyramid. (A photo of the prymid can be seen on his wife Cora's memorial)

Fred Adolphus Dorn died January 27, 1940 at the age of 74 in San Francisco, California. This information is verifiable at the California Death Records site online at

The pyramid is a Masonic Symbol, and several of the markings on the pyaramid indicate that the Free Masons were involved in the making of this monument for the Dorn family.

Fred Adolphus Dorn was a well-known and respected local attorney. His wife, Cora Russell Dorn gave birth to their son, Fred Adolphus Dorn Jr., sometime near May 23rd, 1905. Their son sadly died shortly after being born and Cora passed away only three days later due to complications from childbirth. So Dorn built a huge 25-foot tall pyramid as a memorial to his wife and child. He had granite quarried from Porterville shipped into San Luis Obispo, hand cut, and assembled into his monument. Because of its sheer weight, the serpentine rock beneath where it is erected is the only spot in the cemetery that could withstand its bulk. And at the time, it is estimated to have cost between $75,000 and $100,000.

The block outside the door is meant to seal the tomb once all the Dorns have passed away, so since the block has not been placed, it is believed there is still a living Dorn.
