DeKALB – Annabelle C. "Anne" Battista, 95, of DeKalb, Ill., died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center, DeKalb.

She died peacefully from complications of a lung tumor. DeKalb County Hospice supported her in her final weeks.

Born Oct. 1, 1917, in Chicago, to Catherine and Hans Jacobsen, who settled here from Denmark. Anne graduated from Hyde Park High School and from secretarial school, before working as a secretary and stenographer in Chicago's Loop. Anne met her future husband, Pat Battista, when he delivered mail to her office; together they raised four children: Janet, Charles, James and Carol.

After many years as a homemaker, Anne returned to being a secretary for the Motorola Co. in Chicago, and later at the University Health Sciences Center in Portland, Ore. After Pat died in 2004, Anne lived at Barb City Manor, DeKalb, where she had many good friends, including her friend and companion, Field Utter.

She is survived by her daughters, Janet Battista of Madison, Wis., and Carol Battista of Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany; five grandsons, Matthew Bloch, and Thomas, John, Sam and Christopher Battista; and three great-grandchildren, Jack, Zoe and Charlie.

She was preceded in death by her two sons, Charles and James; and brother, George Jacobsen of California.

A memorial service will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, August 29, at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb, 158 N. Fourth St. The Rev. Linda Slabon will officiate. Anne's ashes will be interred in the Urn Garden at Fairview Cemetery, DeKalb.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to DeKalb County Hospice, 2727 Sycamore Road, Suite 1B, DeKalb; or Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb.
