James Henderson Hand enlisted as a Private in Co. A, 44th Regiment, Georgia Infantry on May 8, 1862 in Henry County, Georgia. Records show that he was paid $1.00 a month while in the military.
He was captured on Oct. 19, 1864 at Strausburg, Virginia. Records showed that he was sent to Harper's Ferry, West Virginia as a Prisoner of War and then sent on to Camp Point Lookout, Maryland where he remained until the end of the Civil War. He made his way back to Henry County, Georgia.
