Robert Lee Adkins, 61, passed away on Sunday, August 8, 2004 at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was surrounded by his family and friends.

The funeral service will be held 2 pm, Wednesday at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Service Chapel with the Reverend Johnny Davis, Chaplain of the Greensboro Fire Department. Burial will follow in Lakeview Memorial Park.

Robert Adkins was born on May 13, 1943 to the late Ollie and Willie Adkins. He was a life long Christian and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was a firefighter with the City of Greensboro from 1965 to 1993, achieving Captain status in 1978. He worked during this time to receive his Associates Degree in Fire Science.

He received his contractor's license in 1988, he went on to build many homes in Greensboro and surrounding communities. He became a licensed home inspector in the late 1990s and owned his own company. In the late 1970s, he was elected President of the Pleasant Garden Jaycees, where he mainly worked with teenagers. He was also the beloved coach of the Pleasant Garden Jaycees BB Gun Team, where he coached teenagers to several award-winning seasons.

The family would like to thank those who helped care for Mr. Adkins at Cone Hospital and the Hospice Unit for their loving care during his last days.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dianne Woods Adkins whom he married on January 28, 1962; daughter, Melissa Adkins Wilmoth; granddaughter,
Virginia Elizabeth Wilmoth; sister, Pearl Adkins Hutchins of Greensboro; brothers, Fred Jefferson Adkins, Jr. of Greensboro, Melvin Adkins of Greensboro and Paul Adkins of Swannanoa; nieces and nephews, Tina M. Meeks and husband Chris, Julie W. Karnes and husband David, Jennifer Chrisco and husband David, Karen Poe and husband Roger, Jeff Adkins and wife Laurie and many other nieces and nephews that he cared for deeply. Eight grand-nieces and grand-nephews whom he loved dearly.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m., today at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Service and other times at the residence. Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Service is serving the Adkins family.
