Death: Dec. 1, 1952
Nuckolls County
Nebraska, USA

JESSE JAMES CARPENTER was born on December 8, 1885 in Summerfield, Marshall County, Kansas, and died on December 1, 1952 in Superior, Nuckolls County, Nebraska. He was the son of JOHN WESLEY CARPENTER (1854-1924) and his wife MELISSA SAMPSON (1857-1932).

Jesse married (1) BERTHA MABEL HANDLEY on March 16, 1915, the daughter of FRANCIS HANDLEY and his wife MARGARET PUCKET. Bertha was born on September 5, 1889 near Narka, Republic County, Kansas, and died on May 16, 1922 in Superior, Nuckolls County, Nebraska.

Jesse married (2) MAMIE CLARA HOFFMAN on August 20, 1926 at the Nelson courthouse in Nelson, Nuckolls County, Nebraska. She was the daughter of CHARLES LEWIS HOFFMAN and RACHEL AGNES HUNT. Mamie was born on December 20, 1896 near Nelson, Nuckolls County, Nebraska, and died at the age of 96 on January 9, 1993 in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri.

Jesse James Carpenter, son of John Wesley and Melissa Sampson Carpenter, was born December 8, 1885 in Marshall county, Kansas, and died December 1, 1952 at his farm near Superior, Neb., at the age of 66 years, 11 months and 23 days. He had been in ill health since suffering a stroke five years ago.

In 1900 he moved with his parents to a farm near Munden where he lived until 1912 when he moved to the Superior, Neb., community where he lived until his death. [This is incorrect. Jesse did not move to Superior until the fall of 1923 after the death of his first wife.]

He was united in marriage to Miss Bertha Handley in March 1915 and to this union were born a son and a daughter. The daughter died in infancy. [According to wife Bertha's obituary, they had three children but only one child, son Harold, survived.] In 1922 his first wife died and on August 20, 1926 he was united in marriage to Mamie Hoffman of Nelson, Neb. To this union two daughters and one son were born.

Mr. Carpenter is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mamie Carpenter, of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Arcele Andersen and Mrs. Dorothy Russell; two sons, Harold and Merlin, all of Superior; three sisters, Mrs. Johon Masten of Hubbell, Neb., Mrs. Roy Jenkins of Chester, Neb., and Harriett Carpenter of Fairbury, Neb.; two brothers, William A. Carpenter, and Bert Carpenter, both of Belleville, and five grandchildren.

The love and devotion he had for his family, his kindly spirit among friends and fellowmen and his devotion to the good things of life cannot be told in words, but they are felt in the hearts of his loved ones and friends.

Funeral services and burial were held Tuesday, December 4, in Superior.
