Death: Jan. 16, 1928

Martha J. Ballard, mother of Marshal Ballard, died at her late residence, 2000 Fulton St., Aurora, Tuesday, January 17th, 1928, at the age of sixty-nine. She was born in Lamoni, IA., & had lived for many years in Missouri. She came here in 1918 & has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Sadie Parson, on Fulton Street. Mrs. Ballard was a most devoted mother, & had reared a large family of thirteen children, ten of whom survied. She had many friends here & in her old home in Missouri who will deeply regret to hear of her death. She leaves 10 children, J.W. Ballard, Lewis Ballard, & Mrs Sadie Parsons (sic), of Aurora, Colo., E.C. Ballard & Mrs Mabel Bunch, of Los Angeles, CA, Mrs. Myrtle Hayes, of Cameron, MO, E.C. Ballard of New Hampton, Mo., T.H.Ballard, of Red Oak, IA., & Marion Dennis of Fayette, IA. Funeral services were held Thursday moring at 10:00 o'clock at the Thompson Mortuary, the Rev. T.F. Lund, of the Community Church, efficiating. The interment will be at Bethany, MO. Marshal Ballard & Mrs. Myrtle Hayes accompanied the remains there. The sympthy of Aurora is extended to the sorrowing children in the loss of their dear mother.

Additional Information:

Martha was orphaned between 1867-1868 & was raised in a foster home. Her father died in the Civil War & her mother, Amanda Donahoo, died by 1868. Her first husband was John Henry Dennis. They were married 17 Dec 1875. There were two children by this union. Alfred Austin Dennis & Marion Biddenfield Dennis. After John's death, she remarried to Laten Lauden Ballard. They had 11 children; Myrtle, Mark, John Wesley, Thomas H., Sara Jane "Sadie", Lewis Erving, Elmer, Ralph, Goldie, Evera, Mabel & Marshal. She primarily lived in Missouri until approximately 1918, where she moved to Red Oak, Iowa. She moved to Aurora, Colorado & divorced from Laten in 1921.
