Baccellieri, Michael 'Mike' 86 07/21/1924 03/06/2011 Michael "Mike" Baccellieri, a well-known Pacific Northwest wholesale produce dealer, died March 6, 2011, at Avamere at Bethany in Portland, following a long illness. He was 86. Mike was born July 21, 1924, in Sannicandro di Bari, Italy, to Francesco and Marianna Baccellieri. In 1934, he and his family arrived at Ellis Island and began the long train trip to Portland, where they settled. At a very early age, he showed the makings of an entrepreneur and the successful businessman he was to become, constantly looking for innovative opportunities to help support his family while attending school.

He went on to proudly serve as a private in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Baccellieri embodied the dignity of labor and hard work. No job was too small or too difficult if it meant that a customer would be satisfied. During his long professional career he owned the M. Baccellieri American - Italian Grocery at Southeast 21st Avenue in Portland, and subsequently built the largest independent wholesale produce business in the Pacific Northwest, Mike Baccellieri Produce, serving grocery stores, restaurants and resorts. He traveled "his route" almost daily from Portland to Toledo on the Oregon coast, providing personal service to his accounts and customers, many of whom became lifelong friends. Later in his career he partnered with prominent produce warehouse and distribution owners, continuing his commitment to the freshest produce and highest level of customer service. He worked until he was 83; his work and his customers were his passion.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved the ocean and taught his children and grandchildren to appreciate its power and its bounty. He was also a self-taught carpenter and woodworker. He built a vacation home on Devil's Lake in Lincoln City with his wife and children as his apprentices. A devoted member of the Cedar Mill Bible Church, he lent his beautiful tenor voice to the church's senior choir.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 26, 2011, in Cedar Mill Bible Church, 12208 N.W. Cornell Road, Portland, OR 97229. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in memory of Michael Baccellieri be sent to the Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA), 912 Killian Hill Road S.W., Lilburn, GA 30047 or Cedar Mill Bible Church.
