Mrs. Mary E. Derrick, 77 years old, aunt of Mayor-elect Clarence E. Hodson and mother-in-law of Thomas Schaffer, East Moline chief of police died in the family home, 1538 Fourteenth street, Rock Island, at 7 o'clock last night following five days illness.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 o'clock Wednesday morning in First Methodist church. Rev. Ernest J. Campbell, pastor will officiate. Burial will be in the family lot at Chippiannock cemetery. The body will be removed to the residence from the Knox mortuary at 4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon.
Mary E. Hodson was born in Cleveland, Ohio, July 23, 1855, where she received her early education. With her parents, Henry and Lucy Barnes Hodson, she came to Illinois in 1871, the trip being made by covered wagon. The family settled in Bowling township where Miss Hodson's education was completed. She was the oldest of a family of nine children.
She was married to John Derrick in Chicago in 1875. Following the marriage they moved to Bowling township where they resided until 1920, when they came to Rock Island. Here the home had since been made. Mr. Derrick died in 1927.
Mrs. Derrick was a member of the First Methodist church and of the Woman's Relief Corps. (for widows and children of civil war veterans)
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Edith Cox of Necedah, Wis., Mrs. Mae Johnston of Rock Island, Mrs. Bertha Schafer of East Moline and Mrs. Pearl Thuren, of Sherrard; a son, J. Lester Derrick of Milan; eight grandchildren; and three brothers, Samuel Hodson of Winterset, Iowa, William Hodson of Smithwiick, S.D., and Guy Hodson of Milan. Two daughters preceded her in death.
