Richard, the son of Evangeline J. Miller, brother of Clarence L. Bigley Jr. of Omaha NE, and the son of Clarence L. Bigley Sr., enlisted in the US Marine Corps on November 14, 1963 in Omaha NE. He arrived in Vietnam assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 3d Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

While crossing the Cu De River near the Nam O Bridge an amphibious tractor lost power, and was taken under tow by another LVT. During the rescue operation the tow line broke and the crippled LVT B-36 sank in the swift moving river. All on board drowned, including LCpl Bigley who had been a passenger on board, his remains were recovered and identified on December 16, 1965.
