On February 5, 1852 she married Daniel B. Clarkson in Chattanooga County, Georgia. [Daniel was the son of Joseph Clarkson and Nancy Gober; Daniel was the grandson of William Gober II and his second wife Lucy Campbell who were married April 18, 1785 in Lunenburg County, Viginia; Daniel was the gr-grandson of William Gober I and Nancy Meakins.]
On July 24, 1864 Daniel B. Clarkson was killed in Walker County, Georgia by the notorious Gatewood Raiders, it is said, in his front yard in front of his family. His nephew William W. Clarkson, son of John Hinge Clarkson and Jane Hammond, died the very same day, pulled from his bed and murdered by the Gatewood Raiders. William is buried in the Clarkson Family Cemetery in Kensington, Walker County, Georgia. [See: Find a Grave Memorial #65295842]

After her husband Daniel B. Clarkson was murdered at their home by the Gatewood Raiders on July 24, 1864, Mary Ann married for the second time about 1865 to Ambrose Smith with whom she had three daughters:

The 1900 federal census finds Mary living in Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory in the household of her son John D. Clarkson:

By the 1910 federal census Mary was living with her son William Smith in Justice Precinct 8, Hill County, Texas:

In 1918 Mary Ann Hancock Clarkson Smith was committed by a son to the Eastern Oklahoma State Hospital in Vinita, Craig County, Oklahoma. [The name was changed in 1947 to Eastern State Hospital.] Mary's Oklahoma Death Certificate gives her name as "Mary Clarkston" and according to the death certificate, Mary was a former resident of Haskell County and had been a patient at the hospital 1 year and 3 months when she died of exhaustion and senile dementia on the 21st day of June 1919. She was buried in the hospital cemetery on June 25, 1919.
