Ellen M. McClanahan was born at Kentontown, Kentucky 16 July 1844 and died at her home in Langley Kansas 19 July 1920, aged 70 years three days.
She was married to Andrew J. Ashcraft at Kentontown Ky., 16 February 1868. To this union were born nine children, of whom seven survive to mourn the loss of mother. Living are Mrs. Mattie Hazel of Hutchinson, Kans., Samuel Ashcraft and William Ashcraft of Little River, Kans., Mrs Grace Babgy, Mrs Louisa Hendershot and Forest Ashcraft of Langley Kans., and Mrs. Fannie Hiner of Miltonvale Kans. Two daughters preceded her in death - Mrs. Harriett Yarnall of Homestead Okla. and Mrs Amanda Watson of Langley Kans. There were sixty-one grandchildren, over fifty now living, and eleven great grandchildren.
Grandma Ashcraft's name was a proverb of goodness upon every tongue in the neighborhoods and communities in which she lived. Being a natural mother and nurse to all who were in need, many have been the deeds of kindness and devotion to humanity. For the last year she has been a great sufferer from cancer which terminated in her death. She was conscious up to her dying moment and possessed a remarkable degree of clearness of mind, making every arrangement for her funeral rites and giving loving instructions to her children about all her tokens of remembrance and dispensing with her humble possessions. She humbly sought and found the Savior precious in forgiveness and salvation, of which she gave glorious testimony upon her dying bed. She leaves besides the children and grandchildren mentioned, her husband, other relatives and a host of friends, but while they sorrow, as is natural to us all, they sorrow not as those who have no hope.
The sympathies of the community and neighborhood are poured out upon this occasion in loving remembrance and respect of Grandma Ashcraft. Funeral services held at the M.E. church at Langley at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning were conducted by the Rev. Samuel Wilson of the Wesleyan Methodist of Miltonvale, Kans. assisted by Rev. Funk of Langley. Interment in Langley cemetery.
