Lawrence Edward "Ed" "Ace" Shafer, was born of George and Katherine Shafer, the youngest of more than 10 children, including Michael, William, Rosalie (married Burns), George, Clarence, Wilma (married Hogan), Charles, Pauline (married Crowley), and June (married Thompson). As a Catholic, he served as an alter boy at St. Patrick Church in Bisbee, Arizona and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He attended St. Patrick Elementary School and graduated in 1951 from Bisbee High School where he excelled at basketball and baseball. He served in the US Navy during the Korean War and returned to Bisbee to work as a journeyman pipe fitter and welder for Phelps Dodge Corporation until his retirement in approximately 1983.
Ed was married to Carol June Bonham in the early 60's and was married to Glenda Sue Quayle from 12/2/1968 until 9/21/1981. There were no children from either marriage. He suffered from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and passed away in Tucson on 1/24/03. Ed was an honest, hardworking, patriot who was loved and remembered by many, including his ex-wife, Sue Quayle, the love of his life. Gone but not forgotten.
