There is evidence to suggest that he was usually known by his middle name "Henry" and alternately by his initials "G.H." as it appears on his headstone. He was an American Civil War veteran, in service to the Confederacy beginning with the Lowndes Southrons (organized JAN 1861) following with the 10th Reg Mississippi Co. D until the close of the war. Film Number M232 Roll 34. His grave is not marked to indicate this CSA service.

He married Miss Frances E. Bell on 14 JAN 1884 in Pickens Co., Alabama.
