Son of James and Elizabeth (O'Sheals) Hewett of Gordon County, Georgia (both of whom originated in Spartanburg, South Carolina in the last decade of the 18th century.
Married 1st Emily Adaline McClure of South Carolina, with whom he had three children: Missouri Ann Texas, Walter C, and Roxie Ann Mattie.
2nd wife, Malissa Ann Smith, lies in repose with him here in the Old Albertville, or "Pre-Civil War Cemetery." She was born in Georgia. They had nine offspring: Mary E, Thomas J, Charles Williamson, Martha M, Harland F, Frances Cornelia "Pascie", Sarah Nora, Elizabeth, and Augustice.
They resided in Alabama from 1860 through death, first in Cherokee County, then Marshall.
