Lucinda Martin, age 16, married James Oliver Gates, age 25, on May 23, 1858, in Wapello County, Iowa. She died in 1868, at age 26, ten years after their marriage.
James Oliver was 28, and residing in Mahaska County, Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Company F of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on January 5, 1864.
CIVIL WAR DETAILS:
James Oliver joined the Civil War with his brothers; Edmund Uriah and Levi B.
James was mustered in on January 21, 1864, and mustered out with his company on August 8, 1865, in Atlanta.
His wife, Lucinda, died August 17, 1868, three years, 6 months, after he mustered out. They had one daughter, Marietta, who would have been only 9 years when her mother died.
It was almost three years later, when James Oliver married for a second time. He was married to the widowed, Josephine E. Watson, on March 2, 1871. Josephine had a daughter, Melissa. The couple were married in Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa. They had two children: Elmer Ervin born 1882 and Lana "Laney" born 1884.
His wife, Mrs. Josephine Gates, applied for her widow's pension on August 12, 1890. Her application is #453,047, and her certificate #387,121.
