Birth: Jan. 16, 1958
Death: Dec. 25, 1997

An accomplished mountain climber, Boukreev made several ascents of mountains such as Kangchenjunga, McKinley, Dhaulagiri, Makalu, Manasu, Lhotse and others.

Boukreev was a guide for Scott Fischer's Mountain Madness adventure company during the May 1996 Mount Everest disaster. Boukreev was criticized by author Jon Krakauer in his account of the disaster, Into Thin Air; Krakauer and others maintained that Boukreev should have used supplemental oxygen, and should not have descended before his clients. However, the American Alpine Club recognized Boukreev with the David Sowles Award for his rescue of Sandy Hill Pittman, Tim Madsen, and Charlotte Fox during the storm.

Boukreev died in an avalanche on Annapurna.

R.I.P Anatoli-an amazing climber and a resourceful person, who was able to climb without the modern gadgets. Lack of funds never held him back from doing what he loved. You have my upmost respect as a climber and person.
