Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was serving as a New York City, New York police officer when he offered his services to the Union Army, and was commissioned as Captain and commander of Company E, 133rd New York Volunteer Infantry on August 30, 1862. He rose in rank during his field service, being promoted to Major on August 4, 1864, and to Lieutenant Colonel on November 20, 1864. He was brevetted Colonel, US Volunteers, and Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". Honorably mustered out on June 6, 1865, he returned to the New York City police force, eventually rising to Police Captain. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
