Psychologist. Authoritarian on child development. Leading scholar of child-rearing and human ecology. He was born in Moscow and was six when his family moved to the United States. He later founded the federal Head Start program and in 1979 he developed the ecological systems theory of human development. His theory reflected his belief that an individual's development reflected the influences of five environmental systems. That theory led to new groundbreaking ways in basic research and applications in the design of programs and policies affecting the well-being of children and families.
