Born Dec. 28, 1919, in Troy, he was the son of the late John Robert Nelson and Bessie Kate Whicker Nelson.
Mr. Nelson was a member of First United Methodist Church and was a retired high school math teacher. He spent most of his career teaching in Gastonia, NC. He was a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill where he also earned his Master's Degree in mathematical education. Mr. Nelson served in the US Air Force during World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Dudley Nelson and 11 brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his brother Boyce Nelson of Alexandria, VA and numerous nieces and nephews.
The body will lie in state at Bass-Smith Funeral Home Wednesday, March 23, from 9:00am-5:00pm. A private family committal service will be held Thursday at 2:00pm at Tatum Cemetery in Tatum, SC with the Rev. Mark Moore and the Rev. Bob Nelson officiating.
