My father was a great man! I loved him with all my heart and soul, He was a very proud man to have only an 8th grade education. When he moved to Houston, Texas after 1942, he worked at Armour Packing Company while he studied to become an electrician. And that he did! He was self taught and became a Master Electrician in the City of Houston during the times when blacks weren't allowed to go in to certain neighborhoods, like River Oaks, Spring Branch, Memorial and University Place. He worked in wealthy white family homes and made a name for himself. He retired after about 30 plus years in the electricial business but was recognized as the City of Houston first black electricial inspector in 1989. A ceremony given by The National Women of Achievement was held at The Doubletree Hotel to recognize him and others who were first blacks in their own line of work. It was a beautiful occasion and he was so happy. He was born in Houston County Grapeland Texas to Fred Douglas Banks Sr. and Donie Hicks- Banks.
