Raymond L. Bernard, 86, a life-long resident of Cohoes died February 11, 2012 at Evergreen Commons Health Care Facility in East Greenbush.
Ray was the son of the late Sylvio and Flora Michaud Bernard. He was the husband of the late Frances Hinds Bernard.
Eleven children survive him; Sandra Murray of Cohoes, William Hinds, Alfred Bernard of Florida, Donald Hinds of Maine, Joy (Philip) Sawyer of Cohoes, David (Eva) Hinds of Troy, Robert (Colleen) Bernard of Clifton Park, Kenneth Hinds of Clifton Park, Nancy (Chris) Myers of Brunswick, Terryjean (David) Vanier of Greenfield Center and Steven Hinds (Barbara) of Orchard Park; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren also survive him, along with several nieces and nephews.
Ray was educated in the former St. Marie's School and graduated from Cohoes High School. He was a World War II Army Veteran and during most of his enlistment served in France in the transportation and maintenance units.
Ray was employed for over 25 years by St. Regis Paper as an electrical mechanical maintenance technician. He was also an officer of his local Teamsters Union for more than 20 years.
He retired from the Cohoes School District in 1989. His grandchildren enjoyed this the most. Seeing him everyday was a joy for both him and them. His grandchildren affectionately named him "Pipere," which eventually the entire student body would know him as and call him as he would pass them in the hall. His children and grandchildren will forever cherish the wonderful memories he and their late mom/grandmother created, including hosting Christmas Eve for their large family each year.
Since retiring, he enjoyed camping and watching/helping his late wife fish. She enjoyed fishing as much as he enjoyed watching her.
Ray was very involved in his community. He was a life-long parishioner of Holy Trinity Parish, a member of the former Cohoes Moose Club, The Marconi Club, The PNA and The American Legion. He was also a founding member of the Cohoes Citizens Political Party
The family wishes to extend their thanks and gratitude to the staff of Evergreen Commons, Schodack Square unit for their compassionate and excellent care given to their father during his stay there.
His funeral will be conducted at the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ltd 105 Vliet Blvd, Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. and proceed to Holy Trinity Parish for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m.
Interment will be in St Joseph's Cemetery in Waterford.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home Monday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
