The Ball family had long been operators of the Bemis Point to Stow Ferry. In 1916 he built the first New Ferry and in 1925 Earl became sole owner/operator of this Chautauqua Lake Ferry crossing. He also converted it first from hand operation to steam, then in later years to gasoline power. He also worked as a boat builder and as a fireman.

Alton and Nora Ball were my great grandparents too! Their son Gerald (and Adeline) Ball were my grandparents. Their son Donald Alton Ball had 3 children; 2 daughters and a son. Our dad spent several summers as a young boy with Alton and Nora.
