Monmouth - Born Harry Jerome Affley Jr., son of Harry Jerome Affley Sr. and Agnes Adelia Affley, on May 1, 1924 in Pueblo, Colorado. Harry graduated from Anaheim Union High School in 1942; graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a Bachelor's degree in Zoology from the University of Southern California in 1946. In 1948, he married Barbara Jeanne McBride, who also attended USC. They met at the Rose Bowl and it was love at first sight.
Harry was a member of the inter-fraternity Council and President of Delta Sigma Phi. He was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society for his academic performance and graduated from USC's Keck School of Medicine in 1950. He served his internship in general and vascular surgery at the Los Angeles County Hospital and Wadsworth General Hospital. He was then called to military duty and served as a Lieutenant in the Navy during the Korean War's "doctor draft" at Point Magu, CA. Following that service, "Dr. Harry" then resumed his medical training as a resident at the V.A. Hospital, Los Angeles, CA, and began a private surgical practice thereafter. Dr. Affley was a clinical professor and supervisor of residents at the USC School of Medicine during years 1961-1975. He held the positions of Chief of Surgery and Chief of Staff at Centinela, Hawthorne and Daniel Freeman Hospitals, and as President of the private practice: Briggs, Affley, Nutting and Baisch. He was also active on many boards. Dr. Harry owned a sailboat and enjoyed sailing with family and friends to Catalina and the Channel Islands.
In 1975, he and Barbara and family purchased a ranch in Ashland, Oregon, to satisfy an urge to get back to nature and to enjoy a small community. He continued as an ER physician for Rogue Valley Hospital and established their Occupational Health Dept. He organized The Medford Clinic's urgent care center, and was certified as an aviation examiner for the FAA. He was also a medical consultant for Boise Cascade Corporation. He enjoyed farming, fishing, and hunting during these years.
Upon retirement and the loss of his wife in 2000, Dr. Harry moved to Monmouth, Oregon where he was active in the Emeritus Society of Western Oregon University, and his beloved church, St. Hilda's Episcopal, Monmouth, Oregon. More recently Dr. Harry enjoyed being amongst his many friends at Heron Pointe Retirement Home.
He is survived by his children: Harry Affley III, Mona Johnsey, Janet Long, and Carolyn Affley, and their families.
A private family burial was held December 13, 2011 at the National Cemetery, Eagle Point, Oregon.
On December 22nd, there will be a Celebration of Life at St. Hilda's Episcopal Church, Monmouth, Oregon at 2:00 p.m., followed by a gathering in the parish hall with family and friends.
Condolences may be sent to: The Affley Family, P.O. Box 554, Monmouth, Oregon.
