|Death: ||Aug. 6, 1826|
John Hopewell was born about 1751, probably in Virginia. He was a Revolutionary War veteran, enlisting in Virginia during the spring of 1777 and serving until his discharge in 1780. According to pension records, he served in Col. Daniel Morgan's Rifle Regiment and was at the battles of Saratoga and Monmouth. He married Sarah Edwards and the couple had 10 children. Over the years, the family lived in Virginia, Kentucky, and Indiana, where John died in 1826. His unusual monument in Mt. Zion Cemetery was placed there in 1902 at the direction of one of his grandsons.
