Joe Ciemny, 73 pioneer and former mayor of Elyria, died at the Ord hospital at
6:00 p.m. Tuesday, less than 24 hours after he suffered a stroke of paralysis at
his home. Funeral arrangements are not complete, pending the arrival of his
children.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 at the Pearson and
Anderson chapel, with Rev. W. Ray Radliff in charge.

Joe Ciemny, Resident of Elyria 34 years, Mayor Two Terms, Died Oct 7th
With the passing of Joe Ciemny, who died at a local hospital Tuesday, Oct. 7,
another of the best known men of the village of Elyria is gone. He became
seriously ill a few days ago and was brought to Ord in the vain hope that
something could be done for him.
Joseph Ciemny was born in Poland, Febr. 8, 1868, and was 73 years, 7 months and
28 days old. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Ciemny, and came to this
country at the age of 5, living in Pennsylvania and Illinois until his arrival
in Valley county 51 years ago, where he farmed for 17 years near Elyria.
He then moved to Elyria where he made his home until the time of his death. He
was married to Nellie Flakus at the Polish church west of Ord in 1892. He had a
part in the formation of the village of Elyria, and recently served two terms as
its mayor.
He is survived by his wife, and eight children, five sons and three daughters;
James of Lincoln, Leon of Elyria, Mrs. Catherine Hoyt of Wilmington, Calif. Mrs.
Helen Childs, also of Wilmington, Mrs. Clara Moore of Bellflower Calif. John of
Comstock, Edmund of Sargent and Archie of Comstock. A son and a daughter
preceded him in death.
Two brothers and three sisters survive, also. They are: Charles of Burwell,
Anton of Elyria, Mrs. Julia Swanek of Elyria, Mrs. Mary Swanek of Burwell and
Mrs. Jocie Osentowski of Burwell, One brother preceded him in death. There also
are ten grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2:30 from the Pearson and
Anderson chapel, with Rev. W. Ray Radliff of the First Presbyterian church in
charge. A group of nephews acted as pallbearers. Burial was made in the Ord
Cemetery.
