Roswell Stevens, Jr. came to Northeastern Ohio in 1799 with Eliphalet Austin, George Beckwith, and three hired men. He had been born in Connecticut and married in Massachusetts to Molly (Polly) King on September 2, 1798.
After his service in the War of 1812, he settled in Montville, Geauga, Ohio. Because of crop failures, he left Montville in 1817 and did not return until 1819, from which time he did not leave.
Stevens was elected Justice of the Peace, township clerk, and was appointed first postmaster (serving from 1823 to 1837).
He is buried in Montville Cemetery.
