Harry B. Bartlett, of Midland, went home to be with our Lord Jesus Christ Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at a local nursing home.
Harry was born Oct. 21, 1915, to Jim and Ruby Bartlett in Tracy. He graduated from Rockdale High School. After graduation, he worked his way through college as a singer on a local radio station in Fort Worth, while attending Texas A&M in Arlington. He earned an associate’s degree in aeronautical engineering. Harry enlisted in the Navy, during World War II. Harry was an amphibious boat pilot for the Navy and landed the first Marine troops during the invasion of Okinawa. One of Harry’s favorite things to do in the Navy was boxing. During this time he became known as “Hurricane Harry,” which earned him a Featherweight Championship. After his honorable discharge, Harry worked as a traveling salesman for Periodical Sales Company of Chicago. During his time with Periodical, Harry was allowed to travel 48 states of the Union, until he settled in Idaho. He later worked in the Lumber Industry, but his love for sales took over and he then became Sales Manager of J.C. Penney’s in the men’s fashion department. During his spare time Harry also sold Watkins Products. Harry and his wife, Lou, opened their home to needy and troubled drug dependent children. Harry and Lou retired and moved to Temple, after 45 years in Idaho. They were involved in the First Assembly of God Church in Lewiston, Idaho and Temple. Harry moved to Midland in November 2004 to be near his daughter, Dolores L. McCall. Harry was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He will be missed.
His wife, Louella; his parents, Jim and Ruby; and one brother, Iva Lee Bartlett preceded Harry in death.
Harry is survived by his daughter, Dolores L. McCall of Midland; two sons, Jimmy Lynn Bartlett and wife, Hilda, and Rocky Mark Bartlett and wife, Nancy, both of Portland, Ore.; two grandchildren, Naomi and Jenny, both of Portland, Ore.; and four great-grandchildren; four brothers, Joe Harvey of Houston, Walter “Bud” of Conroe, Clifford of Rockdale, and Bill of Salado; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Harry’s last few months on God’s green earth were joyous and peaceful, thanks to the special attention received from Bobby Baker, his loving caretaker.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 26, at First Christian Church in Rockdale with the Rev. Doug Springer officiating. Interment will follow at IOOF Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home, 1041 Highway 79 W., Rockdale, (512) 446-5454.
Jesus died alone so we don’t.
