He was a War Veteran that lied about his age & said he was born in 1844, to join at 14 years old With his Dad William Frances Harris, as a Private in Company I Morgan's Regiment Texas Cavalry C.S.A. Most Texas partisan ranger units were used as a mobil strike force which was made up of independent companies. One such unit was Maj. Charles Leroy Morgan's Texas Cavalry Battalion. They also had no uniforms and most were armed with shotguns.

He is listed in the "Civil War Prisoner of War Records, 1861-1865" who surrendered at New Orleans, La on May 26,1865 and was paroled on June 20 of 1865 five days after he turned 18 years old.
