William's gravestone is very weathered and practically unreadable. His exact birth date is not known and his birth year is an estimate from the announcement in the Perry County Democrat of his death 13 April 1848 age 84 in Centre Township, Perry County.

He is recognized as a Revolutionay War veteran on a plaque at the cemetery. Assuming his estimated birth year is correct, his service was at a very young age. Extant records from the Pennsylvania Archives have a William Gardner, Jr., on the muster rolls of 23 October 1777 and 14 July 1778 in Frederick Watts' 7th Battalion 8th Company commanded by William Sanderson - the latter record as inactive, delinquent and fined for not appearing for muster.

He is found in Perry County records: listed as a son in William Gardner Sr's will, and initiating guardianship action for his daughter Sarah's minor orphaned children in the 1830's.

His family is mentioned in a vanity biography of William Shatto whose mother was William's daughter Julianna, stating she came from a large family of 12 daughters and 2 sons.

Many of his children remained in Pennsylvania while a number of migrated to Ohio and further points west.
