Nick Balkema Obituary

Sioux Center: Funeral services were held at the Central Reformed Church of Sioux Center on Monday afternoon, Feb. 1, for Nick Balkema who passed away at the age of 88 years following a short illness. Services were under the arrangement of the Vander Ploeg funeral home and Rev. Marion Klaaren officiated. Burial was at the local cemetery with sons as pall bearers.

Mr. Balkema was born at Gibbsville, Wisconsin on April 7, 1865. On December 9, 1886, he was married to Clara Van Rooyen of Newkirk, who now survives with the following children. Kate, Mrs. Fred Den Beste of Sioux Center, Dr. Walter Balkema of Sheldon, Florence, Mrs. P. B. Mouw of Sioux Center, Raymond of Burlington, Ia., Clayton of Sioux Center and Lucille, Mrs. Eardly Scheutz of Lincoln, Neb. One daughter, Jeanette, Mrs. Wm. G. Van Roekel and two grandchildren, Alice Den Beste and Dorothy Ellen Balkema, preceded him in death.

He is also survived by two brothers, Albert and James, both of Orange City and a sister Mrs. J. Van Rooyen of Paramount, Calif. Also 17 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Mr. Balkema was a charter member and a charter elder of the Central Church and taught Sundayschool for many years. He was a Sioux Center business man for 54 years retiring in 1941. He took an active part in civic and community affairs, served on the town council for many years and served on the school board for 35 years. He was elected to the Iowa Senate for three consecutive terms.

Many relatives and friends came from a distance to attend the services.
