He Graduated Valley High Vocational School and entered the Navy on 1 May 1944. He served in the Pacific and was reported missing in action 16 Feb 1945. He served as a radioman 3rd class. He was declared dead one year later on 17 Feb. 1946.His body was listed as non recoverable.

He was awarded the APTO Ribbon with battle stars, the Purple Heart and the Presidential Citation of Death. He left behind his wife Geneva Louise Reese and a daughter, Gwendolyn Penelope Hawkins.
He has a memorial marker in his home town of Valley, Al at Fairfax Cemetery Ellis Ambers Hawkins, Jr
