A Loved Citizen
J. W. Goss, pioneer citizen and justice of the peace of Stilwell township, died at the home of his son Oscar Goss, near Stilwell Wednesday afternoon, January 28, following a lingering illness of several weeks duration, aged 72 years.
The deceased was born near Dardanelle, AR, November 2, 1847, where he lived to early manhood, coming to this vicinity in the year 1878. In the early days of Stilwell he ran a store here and later, for a number of years was manager of the Moon-Elliott Lumber Co. He was an honorable and upright man in every business connection.
In the Masonic and I. O. O. F. lodges, "Uncle John" was a prominent and leading figure, also in the Eastern Star and Rebecca circles he was a benefactor and contributed much in influence and time in cultivating a fraternal spirit among our people. In lodge work he will be greatly missed, for his gentle and happy nature caused him to be loved and reverenced by his associates.
He leaves to cherish his memory two sons, Oscar and Noah Goss, a daughter, Mrs. T. N. Dannenberg, and many other relatives of this community and of Paris, AR and Fort Smith.
Funeral was conducted at the Oscar Goss home Thursday afternoon by Rev. O. S. Snell, followed by Masonic Burial at New Hope.
