She was raised by her mother and stepfather, George Dee Southam. Irene graduated from Provo High School in 1947. She met Ralph Neil Billings on a blind date and they later married in the summer of 1949 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He passed away in October 1998. She was great at sports always being the first to be picked. Irene was a PBX Operator at Mountain Bell and later at the City and County building in Provo. One of her greatest qualities was her love and compassion for others. After losing her parents early in life, she and Neil helped raise her six siblings. She was a Past Worthy Matron in the Order of the Eastern Star in Provo. Irene and Neil hosted many homemade spaghetti dinners for those who donated at the Masonic Temple's yearly blood drives. Before she lost most of her sight to Macular Degeneration, she spent countless hours in her yard and making quilts. She continued to live in her home of 53 years until it was destroyed by fire in January 2009. She stayed with her daughter for a short while before moving to Greenwood Manor in Lehi. An open house celebrating her 80th birthday was held there with family and friends. Our heartfelt thanks are expressed to the staff at the Manor and to 1st Choice Hospice for their genuine love and care.
