Ella was born in Iowa the daughter of David Monroe McCartney and Lydia Ann McGinnis.

Henry and Ella (McCartney) Childs
Henry and Ella Childs and their four children came to North Dakota from Meadow Grove, Nebraska, in the spring of 1908. Henry shipped a car of livestock and household goods and his wife and family came by passenger train.
Henry was born in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin, November 27, 1870. He married Ella McCartney, who was born July 13, 1876. They had four children: Elsie, born July 13, 1894; Alice born December 28, 1897; Estella, born March 11, 1902; and Oscar born August 21, 1906.
For the first two years in North Dakota, the Childs lived in Egg Creek Township and then moved to Saline Township on the Jim Powers homestead that had been purchasČed by J.O. Brans of Marcus, Iowa. They lived there until their family was grown. Later they moved to the Saxton place.
Elsie married William Handy, August 15, 1911 and they have five children. They movČed to Minnesota when the Handy family moved there. Elsie is now deceased.
Alice married Frank Oster, December 21, 1915. They had nine children and continued to live in McHenry County until Frank's death. Alice died in July 1981 and both are buried in Saline Cemetery.
Estella married Dick Carty May 21, 1921 and had three children. They have lived in McHenry County since their marriage. In partnership with their son, Ralph, the Cartys farm and ranch, raising cattle and buffalo. Dick died in September 1984.
Oscar married Letha McCloskey August 21, 1940. They have one son. They moved to Washington State and Oscar died there.
Company was always welcome at the Childs's home. It was customary for neighbors and relatives to gather there on many Sundays.
Ella Childs died March 26, 1943 and Henry died in Minot on August 12, 1959. They are buried in the Saline Cemetery.
