Charles Brown and his mother moved to Alvarado around 1910 and went to work for Tom Brown, who may or may not have been a relative of his, at the Metropole Barber Shop on the downtown square in Alvarado. He eventually bought Mr. Brown out and became the owner of the barber shop. The name changed at that time to Brown's Barber Shop. He married Miss Lenna Mahanay in 1922 in Alvarado, Texas. Lenna's family had settled in the Priarie Valley area of Johnson County in 1874, but her father had moved the family to the town of Alvarado around the turn of the century. Lenna had been working at a local department store when she married Charlie Brown and she later decided she would get her beautician license and the couple combined the barber shop with a beauty shop. The name changed then to Brown's Barber and Beauty Shop. She was a hair dresser for 60 years, continuing after Mr. Brown's death. Mr. Brown was also a barber up until the time of his death. Both attended the First Baptist Church for many, many years. No children came of this union.
