James Scott Bortz, 85-year-old Harrisville school board member, died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Vallie Graham, Harrisville, at 9:45 p.m. yesterday. He had been ill. Born in Harrisville, he was a life-long resident of Butler County. He was oldest member of the Methodist Church in Harrisville. A barber, he retired 15 years ago. Son of the late Henry and Elizabeth Shull Bortz, he survived two wives. He was married to the late Clara Shaffstall Bortz who died in 1920. His second wife, Eleanor Campbell Bortz, died six years ago. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Luella Gerlach, New Castle, Mrs. Vallie Graham, Harrisville, Mrs. Ruth Castor, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mrs. Aleta Young, Grove City R.D. 4; three sons, Charles R. Bortz, Canton, O., Joseph H. Bortz, Pittsburgh, and Irvin P. Bortz, East St. Louis, Mo.; one brother, Fred B. Bortz, Cleveland, O., and one sister Mrs. Lena Bogan, Toledo, O. He is survived by 22 grandchildren 50 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the residence after 7 p.m. today. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Harrisville Methodist Church. The Rev. H. Arnold Ohl will preside. Burial will be in Prairie Cemetery.
