Former Secretary and Distinguished Member of American Astronautical Society Dies at Age 76.
A 1950 graduate of Camden Catholic High School (NJ), John Campbell had a stellar career and family life. From insuring the success of Neil Armstrong's moonwalk communications, to his wonderful 53 year marriage to his beloved wife Patricia, and birth of their only son Mark Patrick, life was truly complete.
Born at home in Pitman, New Jersey in 1932, John earned degrees from both LaSalle College and the University of Pennsylvania. John also served in the U.S. Air Force rising to the rank of Sergeant. John served with a military intelligence unit and was attached to the famous "Red Berets", British special forces, from whom he earned not only respect but his "parachute jump wings" as well. What then followed while living in Merchantville, New Jersey was a successful 40-year corporate career at RCA, General Electric and Computer Science Corporation (CSC) where John led international manufacturing problem solving and trouble shooting initiatives.
In the beginning of man's quest for spaceflight and to walk on the moon, John Campbell was one of the pioneers working with America's greatest minds to formulate policy and objectives for U.S. space travel and to design a national space program that would advance man's knowledge into many disciplines. Widely respected among his peers, John served the American Astronautical Society as Secretary and a distinguished member in the 1960s and 70s.
John's son Mark recalls "I remember sitting on the front steps when Dad pulled up in a black government sedan with two big body guards (I was young then). Dad had a medium sized briefcase hand-cuffed to his wrist. He walked over to me, sat down next to me, and opened the case while his tall escorts, literally looked the other way. Dad said, 'Mark, see this small radio? I helped build it. It's the radio Neil Armstrong will wear on his back during his moonwalk. Touch it softly.' I did. Dad smiled broadly saying with great enthusiasm, 'You are now going to the moon with us!' He got up, began to walk away, looked back and said, 'Oh, by the way pal, keep this little moment just between us.' I have, until just now.
John and Patricia retired a decade ago to Lake of the Woods in Locust Grove, Orange County, Virginia, where John dedicated his time to community service and volunteering for numerous organizations. This includes serving as a Docent at the historic Elwood House, a Shepherd at Lake of the Woods Church and Membership Chair of a local AARP Chapter from which he received the "Distinguished Service Award" in 2006. John also enjoyed volunteering at area Civil War Battlefields, volunteering for the Orange County Sheriff's Office Triad initiative and serving as a Poll Worker on Election Days.
John fought a brave three-year battle with cancer and is survived by his wife, Patricia, and their son, Mark, daughter-in-law Eva and four grandsons Maxwell Xavier, Mitchell Graf, Stuart John and Price Andrew, who reside in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey.
In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Lake of the Woods Church, Lakeview Parkway, Locust Grove, VA 22508. A "Celebration of Life" Memorial Service will be held at the Lake of the Woods Church on Tuesday, March 31st at 11:00 a.m. John will be inurned at Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, May 28th at 2:00 p.m.
