John was born in 1938 in a small farm house on A.A. Barrett Rd. outside of Waco to Blanche Self Barrett and A.A. Barrett. He was the 6th of 8 children born to the Barrett's. John grew up in Waco and worked on the family farm while attending Waco High School. After graduating he continued to work locally and became a brick mason as a trade. While attending his brother-in-law Flay Payne's church service at Faith Baptist Church in Kings Mountain he met and fell in love with Louise Head. The two were married March 14, 1958 and soon built a house close to family and settled down in Waco. John and Louise raised two children, John Jr. "Butch" and Tina, and remained in Waco moving only once from the house they built on North Main St. to the old Whitworth home on South Main St. John was active in the community both as a volunteer firefighter in his younger years and serving several terms as an alderman for the Town of Waco. John was a member of Waco Baptist Church and he had a special relationship with the lord. John enjoyed camping and gardening in the summer months and he was an avid quail hunter in cooler weather. After retiring from brick laying, John worked in sales for Bennett Brick in Kings Mountain and was well known in the construction community. John went to be with the lord on February 27, 2006 following a short illness.
