Only Child of Mr. an Mrs, Bert Carpenter
Suffocated by Heat and Smoke.
Bert, the oldest son of Dr. J. H. Carpenter, of this city, resides in Saginaw
and is employed as brakeman on the F.
&F, M. Tuesday about noon. Mrs. C.
discovered fire in the Kitchen and rushed
out to find her child and he was nowhere
to be found. The Saginaw Courier-
Herald gives, the following account of the
"Theirs was a sad feature of the fire, in
the death of Mr. and Mrs, Carpenter's
4 year-old son Roy, who undoubtedly
Middle of the blaze himself, as he was playing with matches in the kitchen. Mrs.
Carpenter, was in the sitting room and,
smelling the smoke, called '"Roy, come
here, the house is on fire." She attempted to enter a room leading into the
kitchen, where she thought Roy was, but
could not on account of the smoke. She
then passed out through the front of the
houses for getting in her excitement that,
there was a side door leading to the room
where she thought the child was.
"The mother told the fireman that her
boy was in the house, and Chief Wallis
and others went through,, the house,
searching carefully, but could find no
trace of him. The chief consoled the
mother by telling her that the child had
probably got out and was away somewhere. After the fire was out the chief
and Mrs. Carpenter went through the
house again but could not find him.
Subsequently another search was made,
and the child was found in a closet of a
bed room where he had wandered and
closed the door behind him. This closet
had been missed in the other searches on
account of smoke and darkness. The
child was believed to be alive when it was out, but after one around so nothing
dead,and the child was not burned, but
suffocated from smoke and heat.
The house and contents wore damaged to
the amount-of $400,insurance.The remains were brought to Clare
yesterday morning. A short service was
Conducted by Rev. Long at the Congregational church and the burial took place
in Cherry Grove cemetery.
The grief stricken parents have the
sympathy of the entire community.
