Verda was born on November 19, 1924 in McCune, Kansas, to Alvie and Jennie Finch Lanfear. In the summer of 1933 Alvie and Jennie packed up their four children and a couple of friends and made the road trip to Idaho, camping and sightseeing along the way. The family settled south of Caldwell and Verda attended Caldwell schools graduating in 1942. She met the love of her life Floyd ‘Tiny’ Ames at a community dance and they were married June 18, 1945.
Verda worked at the Caldwell Woolworth’s Store until the couple started a family in 1950. In 1956 the family bought a home in the Middleton School District because she wanted her children to attend smaller schools. She resided in that same home until 2016 when she moved in with her daughter Neva.
Verda was always very active in her children’s various activities, serving as a room mother, P.T.A. member, Booster Club member, and Cub Scout leader. She always loved being involved and was willing to help in any way she could.
In 1968 she started as a seasonal worker at Western Farmers Potato plant in Nampa “Just to earn a little Christmas money”. She stayed with the factory through their change in ownership to Carnation Potato and then Nestles Potato finally retiring in 1986.
Verda and Floyd owned Canyon Ceramics & Crafts shop for many years and enjoyed doing the various valley Christmas craft shows, and after retiring traveling to Sumpter, Oregon, for the large outdoor flea market three times each summer. Verda crocheted beautiful afghans for her loved ones and crocheted lovely snowflakes, bells, angels and doilies for family, friends and to sell at the craft shows.
Both sides of their family had reunion campouts in the Lost Lake and Council area and she always looked forward to getting together with all her loved ones and spending time in the mountains.
Verda’s grandchildren were a great joy to her and she loved taking them along to Sumpter and the reunions. The year she retired she and Floyd packed the five grandkids they had at the time into a pickup and camper and headed for Yellowstone. They all had a great time and those are memories the kids will never forget. In later years a couple more grandkids and then great grandkids brought more joy and love to her home.
Verda is survived by her son-in-law Gary Lies, his daughter and grandsons, Tina (Lenny) Hunt and Dylan, Ethan and Logan Berryman all of Caldwell; her daughter Neva Scott of Middleton and her children and grandchildren, son Tim (Emily) Tomer, and children Wesley, Maren and Quinnly of Salt Lake City, UT; and daughter Teresa Tomer (Brian Ristine) and children Makala, Connor and Braeden of Minneapolis MN; and by her son Ralph (Letty) Ames of Caldwell and their children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren, daughter Angie (Matt) Taylor of Middleton and children, Haylee (Wyitt) Kelly their daughter Zoey of Titusville, FL and Cassie and Caden Galemore and Sierra Taylor; daughter Misty ( Ronnie Rager) Greathouse and her children, Killian (Rosie Stephens) Philley, Madisyn (Jonathen Sibley) Hinkle and their son Adrian, Lucas Greathouse and Deyja Norris all of Nampa; their son and daughter Ryan and Bree Ames also of Caldwell.
Verda was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years Floyd “Tiny” Ames, a daughter Linda Ames Lies, and a granddaughter as well as her parents, three sisters and one brother.
