S. Earl Chase was born in Nephi, Utah in 1900, the 2nd son of Sisson Coolidge Chase and Alice Lavinia Pitt (both born in Nephi). Their parents were LDS pioneers born of converts from England. His mother died when he was just 6 weeks old. His father didn't remarry until seven years later and then had five more children. Earl spent much of his early years living with other relatives in that farming community. He completed one year at the University of Utah. He came to Los Angeles and got a job with the Dept. of Water and Power in 1922 as a draftsman. He was active in the Los Angeles Branch (or Adams Branch) in the Young Adult program then known as M-Men and Gleaner program. He had an opportunity to purchase a used treadle type sewing machine for $5 and tinkered with it until he figured out how it worked. He refinished it and sold it for a small profit. He had an opportunity to purchase 3 more and decided to purchase them with two friends from church. He lent one the money so they could be equal partners. He fixed them, and other refinished them, and the third sold them. This led to the establishment of the California Sewing Machine Co., Inc. in 1923. One went on a mission and sold is interest to a fourth friend. Eventually, all were bought out by Earl as they went into other businesses. He married Loretta Thorpe in 1924. When children began coming into the family there was a need for a washing machine. Earl found he could get a much better deal if he bought 3 instead of one. So he bought 3 wringer washes to use one and sell the other 2. This put him into the home appliance business which slowly replaced the sewing machine business. The name was changed to do business as Chase Electric Co. Eventually the sewing machines were eliminated and gas appliances became more popular so the name was again changed to Chase's Appliance. Earl & Loretta were very active in the early Los Angeles Stake (later the South Los Angeles Stake) first in Adams Ward and then in Manchester Ward. He served on the High Council, in the Sunday School and Young Men's presidency, the bishopric and as bishop in some important parts of that history including some significant fund raising activities. This included raising funds for the Manchester Ward chapel and for funds for the new Los Angeles Temple.
