Augusta wreck claims former Moultrie man
The Moultrie Observer
MOULTRIE — Funeral services are planned for Saturday for a former Moultrian who was killed last weekend in a motorcycle wreck in Augusta.
The service for Dondeagio "Don" Bennett, 43, of Hephzibah, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at Friendship Baptist Church in Moultrie. Burial will follow at New Bethel Church Cemetery in Sumner.
Bennett was driving a 2001 Suzuki GSX1300 motorcycle on Windsor Springs Road, a four-lane highway in Augusta, last Saturday when a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado pulled from Veterans Way, a side street, according to a report from the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.
The driver of the Silverado, Robert Lee Dixon Jr., also of Hephzibah, stopped part way in the road, the sheriff's office said. Bennett swerved to avoid the truck, but the bike slid and he struck it.
The sheriff's office received the call at 4:34 p.m., and Bennett was pronounced dead at 5:08 p.m. at the Medical College of Georgia, the accident report said.
Dixon was charged with homicide by vehicle in the first degree, driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to yield after stopping at a stop sign.
"A drunk driver pulled out in front of him leaving a liquor store," lamented Bennett's brother, Nathaniel French, a lieutenant with the Colquitt County Sheriff's Office.
Luke Strong and Son Mortuary is in charge of local arrangements; full obituary information is expected soon.
