Bertha married Walter Franklin Baker on July 15, 1905 in Olathe, Johnson County, Kansas. His Obituary said, "Walter F. Baker, 64 years old, a widely known Johnson County farmer who retired a month ago, was found dead in a tourist cabin at Miami, Oklahoma, Saturday afternoon, according to word received today at Olathe, Kansas. Sheriff Emmett Pitt of Johnson County, who contacted Oklahoma authorities, said Mr. Baker died of heart disease sometime Friday night.

A brother of Robert Baker, a former Johnson County probate judge, now of Haviland, Kas., Walter F. Baker was born and reared in the Belleview community, ten miles northeast of Olathe. Last November 4, he held a farm sale, disposing of his farm equipment. He retained ownership of a 280-acre farm however. He and his wife had been in Phoenix, Ariz., visiting a son, Dale M. Baker. Last week he returned to Olathe on business. He was on the way back to Phoenix when he was stricken.

Besides his widow, his son, and brother, he leaves a daughter, Mrs. Edith Baldwin, Dallas, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday at the Julien Chapel at Olathe. Burial will be in Olathe Cemetery.

Walter was son of Alexander Baker and Martha Stuteville Baker.

Bertha Baker was Daughter of John Hardin and Lois Iantha (Smith) Johnson. John Hardin Johnson was son of DABNEY JOHNSON, SON OF MICAH.
The following was researched and written by Bertha's granddaughter, June. The original is from "Micah Johnson's Biography" found in the Howard County, Missouri Genweb. It is also found in "The Johnson's and Their Connections:" My grandmother had a wonderful memory and supplied me with hundreds of names and dates of all our relatives, including many photos. I asked her if she could remember anything about her grandparents and she told me her Johnson ancestors lived "SOMEPLACE IN VIRGINIA" in an area where they could set on their porch in the evening and could see the fires on a mountain top where the Indians were dancing and this place was called, "THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE." This was all that she had remembered about her great grandparents.

On a map of Floyd County, Virginia, I discovered a cemetery named "The Devil's Backbone." The Indians were very superstitious when it involved spirits from the dead and they no doubt did their dance here on the gravestones to keep the spirits in good humor or drive away the evil ones.

In Micah's day, the location of the Devil's Backbone Cemetery was in Franklin County, Virginia. This area became Floyd County in 1831 when it was formed from Franklin. The cemetery itself is at an elevation of 2708 feet at the point of the mountain where Blackwater Valley can be seen. There is a sheer knife-like spur jutting out between this overlook and Pine Spur. The cemetery is still there today (1994).

Micah apparently inherited quite a bit of property, as in 1782 he was listed on the Henry Co., VA tax list as Michael Johnson with fourteen slaves, a large number for the area, especially for such a young man. Franklin County would be formed out of part of Henry four years later in 1786.

By 1788, however, he either owned no slaves or had hired them all out:

One white over 16
No blacks over 16
No blacks 12-16
Three horses

1799 Franklin Co., VA, tax list
Michael Johnston
One white tithe [male over 16; Michael]
One black male
Two horses
Amount of tax = 68 [the highest in his neighborhood]

In 1810, Micah and family are listed four names away from John Hall, whose sons would later go to Missouri with them. Elijah Brockman is also nearby. In addition to his wife and six sons still at home, Micah is listed as the owner of three slaves, one of them the man named Tom who he later freed in Missouri.

The Johnsons left Patrick County right after the above deed and arrived in Howard County, Missouri before May 30th (1828) when he entered 80 acres for a Patent.

In 1828 or the spring of 1830?, reportedly, some of the Johnson family went west on a huge wagon train leaving Patrick Co. bound for Jackson Co., MO. They settled in Howard Co., MO. Michael's son Michael Jr. may have also traveled with them, but continued on to Jackson County. Son Larkin had already settled in Jackson Co. in Nov 1822, and son Dabney was there no later than Aug 1827. Other families on the wagon train were named Harris (Larkin's in-laws), Corn, Luttrell, Koger, Slaughter, and Boothe.

In Howard County, Micah lived next door to his son John and family. His wife Mary died before 1830. Micah lived next door to his son John and family.

About 1834, Micah, age 78 remarried. He wrote his will to provide for his new wife. In it, he bequeathed to his wife (not named) all his property of every kind except what may be necessary for the payment of debts.
