Marine LCpl Gamble was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was killed after reportedly stepping on a mine while on patrol. Think of the word ‘mischievous' and young Garrett comes to mind, but you also have to use the words brave and determined. Despite struggling with dyslexia, he did well for himself. Even before graduating in 2008 from Stephen F. Austin High School in Sugarland, Texas, he began to explore the possibility of joining the military. Garrett decided this was something he wanted to do and was anxious to enlist. In October 2009, he was deployed to Afghanistan as a SAW gunman on combat duty near the front lines. Friends and fellow soldiers remember a young man with a deep sense of adventure, a big personality and an avid hockey player. They also laughingly recall how he could eat – you never took him out to eat on your dime unless it was a buffet. Garrett's death was especially shocking because everyone felt he was the kind of infantryman who seemed destined for great things and would be alright. But Garrett liked to refer to himself as a bullet sponge.

Note: Garrett is the son of former professional hockey player Troy Gamble.
