"Prominent Briscoe School Educator Dies Suddenly of Heart Trouble

The community was stunned when the word spread on Sunday, July 26, that Brother Patrick Rupert Gibbs had passed away following a heart attack, early that morning and the boys of Briscoe School who adored this good brother are inconsolable.

Brother Gibbs was born 56 [sic.] years ago at Tipperary, Ireland and came to this country seventeen years ago where he has been associated with the Briscoe School as instructor ever since. He was a member of the order of the Christian Brothers of Ireland.

The funeral services which were conducted by Bishop O'Dea took place at the Briscoe chapel at 9:30 on Wednesday morning and was among the largest funerals ever held in the valley, thirty priests being present. The body was interred in St. Patrick's cemetery.

Brother Gibbs has been instrumental in the building up and success of the Briscoe School which was dear to his heart. Although he demanded strict discipline, he was never unkind in enfourcing it and was idolized by every pupil in the school. He was always loving, considerate and thoughtful to the children in his charge and the boys who had been touched by his kindness marched sorrowfully to the altar two by two and knelt during services.

He came into contact with many people not of his faith who paused on Wednesday morning to pay their last tribute of respect to a good man.

Brother Gibbs was a man of broad education and an art connoisseur but it is for his fairness and kindness that he will be remembered.

Conscious of the abiding beauty of his life of service, of the gentility and forebearance and of the humaness of his spirit, those who had the privilege of knowing him will be moved the more to love mankind, to serve their fellows and to give themselves in helpfulness to the need of the world."
