Texas and San Augustine Civic Leader. After being raised in Tennessee, in 1838 he moved to San Augustine, Texas, where he established himself as a merchant, first with a partner, and later with his sons. He was a Captain in the San Augustine Volunteer Militia and served as Justice of the Peace and in other offices. He was San Augustine's Postmaster from 1842 to 1846. In 1844 he was a brigadier general in command of 600 men under orders from Texas President Sam Houston to assist in quelling a local rebellion, the Regulator-Moderator War.
