James was the son of Joseph E. Akers and Elizabeth Heard. His siblings were Sarah Ann, Catherine, Mary Ellen and Marion.

He married Malinda Mary Cooper on December 9, 1855 in Ray County, Missouri. Their children were Albert, John Thomas, George R., Walter King, Malissa, Mary 'Mamie' E., William Tecumseh and Rebecca E. His stepson was Joseph Baxter from Malinda's first marriage.

His paternal grandparents were Joseph Akers and Janet Neel.
